This academic discipline equips students for professional roles in international development management and policy analysis. The curriculum is organized into three categories. The initial group of courses addresses management topics, offering practical knowledge about the international development sector—including key stakeholders, their interactions, policy formulation and execution, as well as specialized management techniques and challenges unique to this field. The second category emphasizes empirical and theoretical examination of global development challenges, critical policy domains (such as education, healthcare, and environmental resources), or cross-cutting themes (like the effects of trade and investment on economic growth or rural-to-urban migration). Students are also advised to consider relevant courses—like those in the third category—from the Elliott School of International Affairs and other departments, including anthropology, international education, crisis management, geography, and global health. With advisor approval, students may choose any nine credits from these lists or other applicable courses. However, starting with PPPA 6057 (management focus) or ECON 6250 (policy focus) is recommended. Important: Beyond a master's degree, international development careers usually demand professional experience abroad. Students without this background should consult with advisors or career services early in their studies to address this requirement.
