The Master of Arts in Islamic Studies, provided by the Department of Religion, centers on exploring Islam in both its historical and modern contexts, with a strong focus on mastering classical Islamic intellectual traditions. This interdisciplinary program enables students to learn from diverse faculty members who possess expertise in classical Islamic teachings and firsthand experience in Muslim-majority regions. Situated in Washington, DC, the program provides unique access to U.S. government offices, research organizations, NGOs, and the vibrant local Muslim community. It also accommodates non-traditional learners, including professionals, government employees, and international agency staff, allowing them to customize their studies.
The MA program includes an optional specialization in Shi'ism. The Sunni-Shi'a divide remains a key factor in many contemporary conflicts within the Muslim world. Our curriculum stands out by offering in-depth study of both Sunni and Shiite traditions, recognizing that a thorough understanding of modern Islamic affairs requires knowledge of both major branches of the faith.
Exceptional candidates applying for the Shi'ism concentration may qualify for externally funded fellowships. These awards are independently administered and not affiliated with GW.
