To excel as a legal advocate, attorneys require comprehensive legal knowledge coupled with strong analytical, research, writing, and advocacy abilities. GW Law's educational program and varied academic offerings equip students with the necessary skills to thrive in diverse environments—whether in large or boutique firms, public interest groups, government bodies, academic institutions, or judicial systems—and in multiple roles including legal advisor, trial attorney, mediator, negotiator, policymaker, or lobbyist.

Following core requirements, JD candidates can select from an extensive array of elective courses during their remaining studies. This broad curriculum provides significant flexibility for students to customize their education according to personal interests and career aspirations. Many students opt to concentrate deeply in one of the numerous specialized legal fields available.

Moving beyond conventional classroom learning, the law school provides numerous clinical programs, simulated practice courses, and externship opportunities where students develop practical lawyering and advocacy skills. These experiential learning options allow students to balance theoretical legal education with hands-on experience in client consultations, fact-finding, opposing party interactions, government agency communications, client negotiations, and participation in actual or mock court and administrative hearings.
