The PhD in counseling program combines intensive research with hands-on clinical experience at mental health facilities, equipping students to excel in research, publishing, clinical practice, and graduate-level teaching. The curriculum develops clinical, administrative, leadership, and advocacy competencies. Faculty members offer exceptional expertise in areas including trauma studies, human sexuality, youth development, grief counseling, addiction treatment, multicultural approaches, and comprehensive training in diagnostic methods, evaluations, and therapeutic techniques. Doctoral candidates can further refine their abilities through supervisory training at GSEHD's Community Counseling Services Center.
This degree opens doors to academic and non-academic career paths. Alumni hold faculty positions at universities and leadership roles in diverse environments, ranging from school counseling departments to community mental health programs.
The Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) grants accreditation to this program.
