Anthropology examines human diversity and variation across time and cultures. This interdisciplinary field bridges the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences.
At GW, our anthropology program merges humanistic and scientific approaches while conducting top-tier research. Our graduate programs leverage Washington D.C.'s unique resources, including our century-long partnership with the Smithsonian Institution. The capital location offers exceptional opportunities to engage with immigrant communities, policymakers, NGOs, media outlets, and various scientific and educational institutions.
Our PhD program educates students in anthropology's four core disciplines: sociocultural anthropology, archaeology, linguistic anthropology, and biological anthropology, while allowing specialization. Students conduct independent research to become professional anthropologists. The curriculum fosters innovative thinking, strong communication abilities, and scholarly rigor, emphasizing how anthropological theories and methods can address modern societal challenges.
We strongly recommend all students complete public-facing internships to share anthropological knowledge. Admitted students receive fellowships and can access GW's collaborations with the Smithsonian and D.C.'s extensive archives and policy organizations. PhD candidates must produce an original research dissertation.
The Anthropology department offers two distinct PhD programs (Anthropology and Human Paleobiology) with different admissions processes. Applicants should ensure they apply to their intended program.
