The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) provides an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, along with a five-year combined Bachelor's and Master's degree program. Mechanical engineering majors can choose to specialize in one of several departmental concentrations: aerospace engineering, patent law, biomechanical engineering, or pre-medical studies. As the most versatile engineering field, mechanical engineering spans from nanotechnology to large-scale manufacturing. Professionals in this discipline focus on force, energy, and motion principles, designing and building mechanical systems along with thermal devices and processes. Mechanical engineers have contributed to developing various technologies, including automotive and aircraft engines and control systems, robotics, and life-saving medical equipment.
