Develop skills in delivering personalized, group, family, and community counseling through a multicultural and social justice lens. This 60-credit curriculum equips students for fulfilling careers in various settings including community organizations, government agencies, corporate employee assistance programs, academic institutions, or independent practices. The program helps graduates fulfill the educational prerequisites for Virginia's Licensed Professional Counselor certification.
Participants examine multiple counseling specialties, including marital and family therapy, group therapy, trauma and crisis intervention, and addiction counseling. The curriculum emphasizes integrating diversity awareness, social equity, client advocacy, leadership development, and global perspectives into counseling approaches. Graduates gain eligibility to take the National Clinical Mental Health Counselors Examination. Through elective courses, students can concentrate on specialized topics such as mindfulness techniques, treatment of eating disorders, and innovative therapeutic methods.
