The Master of Science in Computer and Information Science provides students with three specialization tracks, enabling them to choose between technological, analytical, or practical/applied approaches to computing. These pathways include Information Technology, Data Science, and Software Engineering. Each track requires 30 graduate-level credits beyond foundational coursework, with distinct prerequisite courses outlined for each specialization. Data Science (DS) Curriculum
Data Science represents a rapidly evolving discipline bridging Statistics and Computer Science, primarily driven by the proliferation of massive datasets containing millions to billions of data points. These datasets originate from diverse sectors including retail, telecommunications, astronomy, healthcare, document repositories, and social media platforms. The MS-CIS Data Science specialization equips students with expertise in key data science applications. Graduates will gain skills in data collection, organization, and management; pattern recognition through visualization, statistical analysis, and data mining; deriving actionable insights from big data; and effectively communicating analytical results across industries. This program prepares students for high-demand roles such as Data Engineer, Data Architect, Statistical Programmer, and Big Data Analyst.
Beyond the core program objectives, graduates of the DS specialization will demonstrate the ability to:
Detect data patterns utilizing advanced data mining methods
Handle large-scale datasets and address practical challenges related to cloud-based storage, processing, and analysis
Derive meaningful insights from extensive textual data collections
