Robots are advancing from fixed-position manufacturing tools to versatile mobile systems capable of gathering data, processing information, and making autonomous decisions. The DARPA Grand Challenges demonstrated both the remarkable achievements in autonomous vehicle technology and the substantial challenges still ahead. Our research at the University of Michigan focuses on developing feedback control mechanisms for bipedal robot movement, aiming to achieve human-like walking agility in machines. Additionally, we employ AI methods to address navigation planning, uncertainty management, position tracking, environmental mapping, sensor data interpretation, and ongoing adaptive learning.
