Educators require more than just earth science fundamentals to foster middle and high school students' understanding and passion for natural sciences. This curriculum enhances teaching candidates' expertise in adolescent learning processes, educational principles, and effective science instruction methods. During the first academic year's fall and spring terms, participants spend three full days weekly in classrooms: three weeks of observation followed by ten weeks of student teaching in the same setting.
In the second year's fall and spring terms, the commitment increases to five full days weekly: two weeks of observation preceding twelve weeks of student teaching in the same classroom. Successful completion results in a Master of Science in Teaching degree and qualifies graduates for New York State initial certification. Candidates fulfilling all program requirements, including coursework and demonstrated field experience competencies, earn Fordham University's recommendation for New York State initial certification in their chosen teaching specialization.
