The Mathematics Education Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is a state-approved initial certification pathway for aspiring middle and high school mathematics teachers (grades 6-12), as well as currently certified educators looking to add mathematics to their teaching credentials. The program also offers a specialized track for Middle School Mathematics (grades 5-9).
This state-approved teacher preparation program adheres to Florida's Administrative Code (State Board of Education Rule 6A-5.066), which may undergo revisions. Participants should maintain regular communication with their academic advisors to stay updated about any modifications to meet evolving state standards. The MAT in Mathematics Education comprises at least 39 credit hours of graduate coursework beyond the bachelor's degree, designed for both career-changers without prior education backgrounds and currently certified teachers seeking additional certification.
Program requirements include developing a comprehensive digital portfolio that showcases professional growth through reflective practice and demonstrates mastery of all Florida Educator Accomplished Practices (FEAPs). Students must submit multiple work samples with reflective commentary for each teaching standard. These portfolio components serve as essential learning tools, enabling candidates to document their development as reflective educators. The program culminates with a mandatory teaching internship.
