Foothill College's Veterinary Technology program is a rigorous two-year course accredited by the AVMA, designed to equip students for careers as Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs). This intensive training combines practical experience with individualized instruction to develop core competencies. Upon completion, students earn an Associate in Science Degree in Veterinary Technology and qualify to take the licensing exam. Note: This is distinct from pre-veterinary or veterinary medicine programs.
Program graduates will achieve foundational proficiency in the knowledge, technical abilities, and practical skills needed across various veterinary settings.
Students will master essential clinical competencies meeting accreditation standards.
The curriculum emphasizes developing crucial professional capabilities including teamwork, ethical practice, effective communication, and analytical reasoning.
Graduates will gain comprehensive knowledge of One Health principles and their role in animal, human, and environmental wellbeing. They'll also acquire strategies for maintaining personal wellness through self-care practices and support networks.
Nationwide demand for RVTs remains strong, with particularly excellent job prospects in the San Francisco Bay Area. Career opportunities span diverse fields including companion animal and livestock practices, specialty clinics, diagnostic labs, academia, government agencies, research institutions, and pharmaceutical companies. Entry-level positions in the Bay Area typically offer $22-$27/hour plus benefits, with some employers providing signing incentives. Experienced RVTs (3-5 years) generally earn $27-$32/hour, while those with specialized training, management roles, or positions in major specialty hospitals, biotech firms, or education often exceed $32/hour. Benefit packages vary significantly, with larger practices and corporations offering the most comprehensive options.
Veterinary Assisting courses operate independently from the accredited Veterinary Technology program. These introductory courses serve both aspiring veterinary professionals and current field workers seeking skill enhancement. Delivered primarily online with required practical components, the program requires students to secure their own clinical placements. Completion of all three courses results in a certificate noted on official transcripts.
