A master's degree serves as the foundational requirement for entering this profession, with advanced graduate education necessary for specialization and meeting criteria for national certification, state licensure, and teaching credentials. Practitioners operate in diverse environments including educational institutions, healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers, long-term care homes, corporate settings, government health departments, research labs, and private practices. While regulations vary, most states mandate licensure for all work environments except public schools or federal institutions. Beyond direct client care, professionals may engage in research, teaching, or managing programs and agencies within the field. Our program requires students to complete core coursework during their initial two semesters at FSU while obtaining hands-on clinical experience at the university's Speech and Hearing Clinic. Beginning summer of their first year, students select from available electives for the subsequent three terms. Community and school practicum placements commence during the second year's Fall and Spring semesters. The program culminates with a full-time internship, allowing students to select from numerous clinical sites nationwide for their final semester placement.
