The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering's Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering provides PhD and MS programs in both chemical and biomedical engineering, along with an ABET-accredited BS in chemical engineering. The department focuses on developing a nationally recognized graduate research initiative that spans applied and theoretical domains. Faculty emphasize creating versatile, interdisciplinary graduate programs to equip students for complex challenges in contemporary research, industry, and societal needs. The integration of engineering and medicine has spurred significant healthcare innovations, leading premier U.S. institutions to establish biomedical engineering graduate programs. This field now represents the fastest-growing engineering discipline nationwide, projected to see greater workforce expansion than any other engineering sector in the coming decade. The program aims to cultivate professionals for careers in industry, government, and academia within clinical research, bioengineering, biotechnology, and allied fields. Biomedical engineers develop medical and biological solutions to enhance patient outcomes. The BME graduate curriculum concentrates on cellular/tissue engineering, biomaterials, and bioimaging, equipping students from engineering, medicine, chemistry, physics, and biology backgrounds with skills to advance healthcare technology and address practical biological and medical challenges in both research and industrial environments.
A baccalaureate degree in chemical engineering or an allied field from an accredited college or university;
Fulfillment of the requirements for the baccalaureate degree or its equivalent. Students may be required to satisfy deficiencies by taking undergraduate courses or they can enroll in a Summer Transition Program if they do not have a degree from an accredited chemical engineering degree program;
An undergraduate or graduate GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale);
International students: For students whose native language is not English and who did not graduate from an accredited US institution with either a BS or MS degree, minimum scores on the TOEFL are 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 80 (Internet-based).
