Stony Brook University's innovative Biomedical Informatics Program is a joint initiative between the School of Medicine and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. This multidisciplinary area focuses on harnessing biomedical data, information, and knowledge for scientific research, problem-solving, and decision-making, all aimed at enhancing human health. Our program integrates BMI education with research and clinical applications at the Stony Brook University Health Sciences Center, where quantitative approaches have become fundamental to disease understanding, prevention, and treatment. Additionally, we prioritize training students to develop software solutions and perform computational analyses, mirroring the engineering-focused approach of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. This redesigned informatics curriculum prepares BMI students to contribute meaningfully to Systems Biomedicine, bridging patient-focused information systems with the analytical tools required for interpreting large-scale biomolecular data. The program delivers instruction through lectures, seminars, and hands-on projects, preparing graduates for diverse career paths in academic institutions, research facilities, healthcare organizations, private industry, or public sector roles.
