The Department of Anthropology invites graduate students pursuing master's degrees to explore diverse fields including archaeology, biological anthropology, and sociocultural studies. Our faculty specialize in research across regions such as the American Southeast, Canada, the Caribbean, Mesoamerica, and Australia. Students can engage in academic and field studies covering ancient and modern archaeology, marine archaeology, geological archaeology, animal remains analysis, cultural studies, visual ethnography, documentary production, Indigenous studies, and skeletal biology. Florida State University's Anthropology Department collaborates with the Southeast Archeological Center (SEAC), managing archaeological investigations and artifacts from National Park Service sites across the Southeast, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. SEAC's vast collection contains over three million artifacts representing cultures from the earliest inhabitants to modern times. The department and SEAC jointly occupy facilities at Innovation Park near the university's primary campus.
Located in Florida's capital, Tallahassee houses the State Department overseeing cultural preservation. This includes managing the Florida Master Site File, Archaeological Research Bureau, National Register listings, and Folklife initiatives. The city also hosts offices for the U.S. Forest Service, State Park Service, and multiple private cultural resource companies, providing numerous internship and career opportunities for students. Hands-on training is offered in various archaeological methods (land and underwater), biological anthropology, forensic analysis, cultural research, and media production. Cross-disciplinary opportunities include Geographic Information Systems (Geography Department), forensic computing (Scientific Computing), heritage management (Art History), classical studies (Classics Department), world music studies (College of Music), global education programs (Education College), and Museum Studies (College of Fine Arts).
