As a Carnegie Research 1 university, we offer graduate programs culminating in M.A. and Ph.D. degrees across diverse historical disciplines. The Department houses specialized institutes like the Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution and the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience, providing unique resources for students in these areas. Faculty involvement in the Women's Studies Program and Middle East Studies Center creates further academic opportunities.
Our History Department provides multiple graduate pathways, including Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs designed for various professional trajectories. The department excels in graduate studies focusing on American, European, African-American, Middle Eastern, Asian, and Latin American history. Beyond the conventional MA program requiring thesis completion and field specialization, we offer a public history MA track for careers in archives, museums, and historical positions in government or private organizations. Alternative options include an MA teaching track and terminal MS degree, with exceptional candidates qualifying for our accelerated MA-PhD program.
