The College of Law's three-year Juris Doctor program combines foundational legal studies with cutting-edge theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches. First-year students build a strong base in legal history, doctrine, and analytical methods, preparing them for advanced coursework. During their second and third years, students enjoy nearly complete elective freedom, choosing from diverse offerings including theoretical classes, industry-specific courses (such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and sports/entertainment law), and practical learning experiences. Our curriculum prepares graduates for success in business, government, and legal practice, with particular strengths in business law, environmental law, and international law. The program features ten joint-degree options with other Florida State University departments, live-client clinics in multiple legal areas, and extensive externship opportunities statewide and beyond. Students can participate in competitive advocacy programs through Mock Trial and Moot Court, or contribute to one of three student-run law journals.
Recognized as Florida's top environmental law program and ranked 15th nationally by U.S. News & World Report, our environmental law offerings include specialized courses in energy law and land use regulation, a certificate program, and externships in Florida and Washington, D.C. The student-edited Journal of Land Use & Environmental Law ranks among America's top 20 environmental law publications. Active student organizations like the Environmental Moot Court team and Environmental Law Society provide additional engagement opportunities.
