The College of Law's three-year Juris Doctor program starts with fundamental courses before advancing to contemporary theoretical and interdisciplinary studies. The initial year establishes core knowledge in legal history, doctrine, processes, and analytical methods essential for advanced coursework. During the second and third years, students enjoy nearly complete elective freedom, choosing from diverse subjects and teaching methods. Our curriculum spans from purely theoretical classes to industry-specific studies in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and entertainment law. Practical learning opportunities abound, preparing graduates for careers in business, government, and legal practice. Beyond our renowned business, environmental, and international law programs, we boast exceptional criminal law studies. Students may pursue ten joint-degree options through collaborations with other Florida State University departments. Hands-on experience is available through family law clinics, children's advocacy programs, and statewide externships. Co-curricular activities like Mock Trial and Moot Court develop advocacy skills, while student-run journals enhance research and writing abilities.
Supplementing a Juris Doctor with a certificate demonstrates specialized expertise to employers. We offer certification in three disciplines, including our Business Law Certificate Program. This focused training covers corporate structures, finance, economic principles, and taxation, exceeding standard J.D. requirements. While providing deep knowledge in these core business areas, the program encourages students to develop comprehensive legal expertise across multiple fields, creating versatile business law professionals.
