The neuroscience program is a collaborative, cross-departmental initiative focused on research and doctoral education, culminating in a PhD in neuroscience. Faculty participants come from four key departments: biological sciences, biomedical sciences, mathematics, and psychology. While no standalone master's degree exists in neuroscience, students can pursue MS degrees with a neuroscience emphasis through affiliated departments under the guidance of program faculty. Designed to foster fundamental research and advanced neuroscience education, the program emphasizes close student-faculty mentorship. Upon admission, students select a faculty advisor and register within their advisor's department. The curriculum allows immediate research engagement alongside comprehensive coursework spanning diverse neuroscience methodologies, from molecular to behavioral studies. Degree requirements remain consistent across departments, enabling students to switch advisors or departments later, particularly when pursuing specialized dissertation work. The program offers interdisciplinary training opportunities incorporating molecular, cellular, physiological, and behavioral techniques across various research domains such as sensory systems, human neuroscience, cognitive animal models, neurobiology of disorders, and addiction studies. Competitive fellowships and NIH-funded training positions are available. The program also features specialized research support, unique coursework, neuroscience symposiums, and regular visits from leading neuroscientists who present lectures and engage with students and faculty at Florida State University.
