The FSU College of Music boasts one of America's most extensive and renowned theory and composition departments.
We provide exceptional guidance and mentorship for music theory and composition students across doctoral, master's, and bachelor's programs. Our doctoral placement rates rank among the nation's highest, while our undergraduate and master's alumni consistently achieve success in advanced studies and professional careers. Students explore innovative concepts, acquire hands-on experience, and thrive in our nurturing, cooperative environment with faculty and peers. Graduate teaching assistants receive regular faculty supervision, developing teaching skills through classroom opportunities and mentorship, including observed instruction and curriculum support. Many master's and doctoral students continue performing with groups like the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and numerous campus ensembles. Our department maintains two specialized groups: Polymorphia (a versatile contemporary music ensemble) and EChO (our Electric Chamber Orchestra).
