As the PhD is granted based on innovative, original contributions rather than simply finishing coursework, the program doesn't impose strict course requirements. Students must complete two years of academic residency. The duration to earn a PhD differs significantly among candidates, though they're urged to progress as quickly as their research permits. Typically, students entering with an MA should complete necessary coursework, meet additional requirements, pass qualifying exams, achieve candidacy status, and finalize their dissertation proposal within two years. Beyond this period, the sole obligation is successfully completing the doctoral dissertation.

Ethnomusicology students train in ethnographic research methods by examining cultural theories and methodologies across disciplines. Working closely with advisors, each student develops a personalized program that leverages Berkeley's extensive resources in interdisciplinary and regional studies.
