The Department of Art History provides graduate programs culminating in a Master of Arts (MA) degree focusing on art history and criticism, museum and cultural heritage studies, or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in art history and criticism. These programs aim to equip students for professional roles in academia, museums, archives, galleries, or publishing. Four specialized tracks allow students to tailor their studies to specific career aspirations. The PhD program cultivates scholarly expertise through intensive research in a chosen art historical field, preparing graduates for university teaching or high-level museum positions. Candidates must exhibit proficiency in original research and contextualizing their work within broader knowledge frameworks.
Visual Cultures of the Americas represents an interdisciplinary exploration of artistic traditions across the Western Hemisphere, examining the interplay between indigenous, Western, African, and Asian influences from ancient times to today. This field illuminates both colonial and contemporary societies, showcasing the vitality of native cultures and their post-colonial developments while tracing their global interactions. Current research areas encompass Precolumbian and Mesoamerican art and archaeology, modern North American art and architecture, film studies, and the impacts of mass culture and globalization. While students concentrate on particular subjects, they must also engage with overarching themes in the study of American visual cultures.
