Recognized nationally as one of the most extensive music schools among public universities, Florida State University's College of Music has provided top-tier professional music education for over eight decades. Aspiring professional musicians will find opportunities for artistic and personal development through programs tailored to cultivate composers, performers, scholars, and educators. The College serves as home to numerous campus musical groups, including orchestras, bands, choirs, jazz ensembles, early music groups, nine world music ensembles, various chamber groups, the Florida State Opera, and the Music Theater Program. Annually, the College presents approximately 350 performances and productions while frequently hosting national conferences, workshops, and events like the biennial Festival of New Music.
The Wind Conducting Program provides rich, varied performance and learning experiences within one of America's premier university band programs. Designed by Professor Richard Clary following European orchestral traditions while embracing modern wind ensemble repertoire, the program gives teaching assistants extensive conducting practice across multiple ensembles—from the Campus Band and undergraduate concert groups to the acclaimed graduate-level Wind Orchestra and Chamber Winds. Wind conducting students are encouraged to study with other FSU conducting faculty and lead student ensembles for special events including the Festival of New Music, PRISM concerts, and chamber recitals.
