Recognized nationally as one of the most extensive music schools among public universities, Florida State University's College of Music has delivered top-tier professional music education for over eight decades. Aspiring professional musicians can develop their creativity and personal skills through programs tailored to cultivate composers, performers, scholars, and educators. The College serves as the hub for numerous campus musical groups, including orchestras, bands, choirs, jazz ensembles, early music groups, nine world music ensembles, chamber groups, the Florida State Opera, and the Music Theater Program. Annually, the College presents around 350 concerts and productions while frequently hosting national events like the biennial Festival of New Music.
Florida State University's Jazz Program offers diverse opportunities for students pursuing careers in jazz performance or education. The curriculum covers jazz theory, arranging, music business, history, and pedagogy, along with private lessons for instruments like drums, bass, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and piano. Students perform in three large ensembles (big bands) exploring repertoire from Fletcher Henderson to contemporary artists, while smaller combos emphasize improvisation and group dynamics. Ensembles perform at least twice per semester, and the program hosts a monthly jazz series at Club Downunder in the Oglesby Student Union.
