Civil engineers play a crucial role in shaping the built environment while safeguarding the natural world. They are involved in the planning, design, construction, and operation of structures such as buildings, highways, airports, pipelines, bridges, dams, levees, irrigation systems, water supply networks, wastewater treatment facilities, and many other elements of our infrastructure. The field of civil engineering also encompasses the assessment of environmental and social effects, which have gained significance as society expresses its worries about urban challenges, environmental health, energy use, and enhancing life quality. Civil Engineering covers all areas of practice, including structural analysis and design, geotechnics, transportation, hydraulics, hydrology, water resources, and waste stream management.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is dedicated to instructing students in the core principles of civil engineering science, analysis, design, and management, enabling them to pursue careers as licensed engineers, engage in fundamental and applied research, advance civil engineering knowledge, serve as a resource for community engineering advice, and support the ongoing education of engineers and other interested parties. The department has a particular commitment to making civil engineering education accessible to minorities and women.
