Civil engineers play a crucial role in shaping the built environment while safeguarding the natural world. They are responsible for planning, designing, constructing, and managing structures such as buildings, highways, airports, pipelines, bridges, dams, levees, irrigation systems, water supply networks, wastewater treatment facilities, and numerous other elements of infrastructure. The field of civil engineering also encompasses accountability for environmental and societal effects, which have gained increased significance as society voices its concerns regarding urban challenges, environmental standards, energy use, and enhancing life quality. Civil Engineering focuses on all facets of civil engineering practice, including structural analysis and design, geotechnics, transportation, hydraulics, hydrology, water resources, and waste stream management. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is dedicated to instructing students in the core principles of civil engineering science, analysis, design, and management, enabling them to pursue careers as professional engineers, engage in fundamental and applied research, advance civil engineering knowledge, serve as a resource for community engineering advice, and support the ongoing education of engineers and other interested parties. The department has a particular commitment to making civil engineering education accessible to minorities and women.
