The Sociology Department at Florida State University boasts over 20 faculty members with diverse specializations spanning Demography, Health and Aging, Family Studies, Gender, Inequality, and Social Change. Our renowned undergraduate and graduate programs enjoy national recognition, particularly throughout the Southern region. We welcome discussions about enrolling in sociology courses or declaring it as your major.
Our undergraduate curriculum focuses on five key concentrations: Social Structures, Individual and Society Dynamics, Population Studies and Human Environments, Contemporary Social Challenges, and Family Studies. Qualified undergraduates may pursue Directed Individual Research with faculty mentors and participate in our Honors Program.
The Sociology major requires thirty credit hours. Mandatory courses (with a minimum C- grade) include: Sociological Theory (SYA 4010), Social Research Methods (SYA 4300), and Social Statistics (SYA 4400). Students complete their remaining 21 credits through selected SYA, SYD, SYG, SYO, SYP, and approved IDS courses. The minor requires fifteen credit hours, with both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree options available.
