Students can pursue majors in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish, gaining comprehensive knowledge of each language's linguistic structure, literary traditions, and cultural contexts. The department permits selecting a second language to satisfy minor requirements, with additional offerings in Arabic, Hebrew, and Portuguese. Linguistics classes are available, along with combined majors or business-focused concentrations that enhance career prospects through greater adaptability. Our curriculum features cutting-edge hybrid formats and digitally-supported courses.
The Modern Languages and Linguistics Department teaches Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, prioritizing intercultural communication skills. Beyond language instruction, we provide linguistics courses and English-taught classes exploring cinematic traditions from Arabic, Brazilian, Chinese, Francophone, German, Hispanic, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Turkish cultures. Our offerings include cultural studies of Hispanic, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Slavic, and Turkish societies, plus folklore studies and translated literature courses. Florida State University requires all students with prior language experience (from secondary education or study abroad) to complete departmental placement testing before enrolling in French, German, or Spanish courses at any level

Freshman admission is a holistic and selective process, and no single criterion guarantees admission. Rather, we consider all the documentation you submit, and we carefully review your academic record and test scores to ensure that you are prepared for the rigorous curriculum you will encounter at Florida State University.

The courses listed below represent the minimum required for admission consideration:

4 English courses, at least three with substantial writing requirements

4 mathematics courses at the Algebra I level and higher

3 natural science courses, at least two with laboratory experience

3 social science courses

2 sequential courses of a world language or American Sign Language

2 elective courses, preferably in the above subject areas
