Students can pursue majors in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish, gaining comprehensive knowledge of each language along with its literature and cultural context. For departmental minor requirements, learners may select a second language. Additional language options include Arabic, Hebrew, and Portuguese, with linguistics courses also available. The program features co-major and Business concentration choices to enhance career prospects and academic adaptability. Our curriculum includes cutting-edge hybrid classes and digitally-supported courses.
The Modern Languages and Linguistics Department teaches Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, prioritizing intercultural communication. Beyond language instruction, we provide linguistics courses and English-taught classes exploring various cultural aspects through film studies (Arabic, Brazilian, Chinese, French/Francophone, German, Hispanic, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Turkish), cultural studies (Hispanic, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Slavic, Turkish), folklore (Russian/Slavic), and translated literature (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Latin American). Florida State University requires all students with prior language experience (from high school or study abroad) to complete departmental placement testing before enrolling in French, German, or Spanish courses at the appropriate level.
