The study of Classics is accessible to all, and students pursuing this major join a welcoming Department that combines the advantages of a small liberal arts environment within a major state university. Faculty members take a personal interest in their students, with the Director of Undergraduate Studies providing individualized guidance to help each student select courses aligned with their academic passions and professional aspirations.
While some Classics graduates pursue teaching or academic careers, this field is fundamentally about cultivating a well-rounded liberal arts education. Our Department creates an environment that honors time-honored scholarly traditions while embracing fresh perspectives and methodologies. We emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of Classical studies, promoting a holistic understanding of antiquity that encompasses history, literature, and material artifacts. Students explore Classical works both within the framework of traditional humanities and through modern critical lenses examining cultural legacies. Every Classics course prioritizes developing analytical reasoning, close reading skills, and strong written and oral communication abilities.
Many Classics majors continue to graduate programs in philology or archaeology, with our Department boasting an impressive track record of placing students in top-tier institutions. Others enter teaching professions or museum careers - FSU takes particular pride in having educated most of Florida's Latin instructors (with national demand for Latin teachers currently exceeding qualified candidates). Importantly, most Classics graduates discover their comprehensive liberal arts foundation provides exceptional preparation for professional fields. Our alumni have achieved remarkable success in law, business, and medical school admissions, with graduates excelling in diverse fields including media, marketing, publishing, theater, and the legal profession. Notably, one of our majors was awarded FSU's sole Rhodes Scholarship to date.
