The Art History Department benefits from exceptional facilities, featuring specialized classrooms, seminar spaces, and a multimedia teaching laboratory. A dedicated curator oversees our media center, which maintains an extensive digital archive containing more than 45,000 images. The School of Art and Design Library supplements these resources with its collection of over 6,500 art-focused volumes, while the University library boasts remarkable holdings including rare books and facsimiles. Students enjoy access to numerous electronic resources, an outstanding interlibrary loan service, and materials from the Ringling Museum Library and other Florida state universities. Our academic programs include Bachelor's (BA), Master's (MA), and Doctoral (PhD) degrees in art history and criticism, plus an MA in museum and cultural heritage studies. These programs equip students for professional paths in academia, museums, galleries, publishing, and archival work. Undergraduate students receive comprehensive training in global art history across diverse cultures and historical periods. Thirteen full-time faculty members deliver instruction in four key disciplines: Medieval, Renaissance/Baroque, Modern/Contemporary, and Visual Cultures of the Americas. The curriculum emphasizes rigorous visual analysis while developing critical thinking and writing abilities. Art History graduates leave our program well-prepared for advanced study or arts-related careers.
