The Medieval Studies program at Florida State University is a vibrant and expanding field of academic exploration. Scholars from the Colleges of Fine Arts, Arts & Sciences, and Communications collaborate to foster cross-disciplinary investigations of the medieval period (approximately 400-1500 CE). They offer diverse undergraduate and graduate courses while guiding numerous MA and PhD candidates across all medieval disciplines. Curriculum offerings span Archaeology, Art and Architectural History (covering Western, Byzantine, and Islamic traditions), Book History, various historical approaches (social, economic, political, religious, intellectual, and gender studies), Language and Literature studies (encompassing Old/Middle English, Old Norse, Medieval Welsh, Middle Dutch, Classical/Medieval Latin, Church Slavic/Old Russian, Spanish, Italian, Insular French, and French), Manuscript Studies (including British and Continental illumination techniques), and Musicology.

Qualification Requirements

An applicant who desires admission as a first year in college student must be graduated from a regionally accredited high school (or comparable international institution). All transcripts/academic records that are not in English must be accompanied by certified English translations. If the transcript/academic record does not indicate the degree earned and date the degree was awarded, separate proof of degree is required. We require freshman applicants to submit at least one ACT and/or SAT test score to be considered for admission. Florida State does not require the optional ACT writing score or the optional SAT essay. We encourage applicants to take both the ACT and SAT, and to attempt each exam more than one time to earn the highest possible score.
