The doctoral program in the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition equips graduates for leadership positions across research institutions, academic settings, government bodies, corporate sectors, and community organizations. Alumni from Stempel College have excelled in securing prominent roles, including entrepreneurial ventures. This advanced degree serves as an ideal qualification for professional growth and enhanced income opportunities.
Our PhD program enables students to collaborate closely with distinguished faculty members who provide mentorship as educators, researchers, and practitioners. The department features cutting-edge research and instructional laboratories. Faculty members also engage in off-site research within diverse community environments such as healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and clinical settings.
Doctoral candidates complete a mandatory 15-credit Research and Methods Core curriculum. Students then work with their Dissertation Committee to create a customized study plan for advanced dietetics and nutrition coursework, which may incorporate relevant graduate-level classes from other Stempel College departments or FIU programs. After completing coursework and achieving candidacy status, students must finish at least 15 dissertation credit hours. The program requires a minimum of 55 post-master's or 75 post-bachelor's credits. Detailed course requirements are available in the PhD Advising Form. Beyond academic coursework and dissertation work, students engage in professional development activities including seminars, colloquia, and workshops throughout the department and college.
