The Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) is a practice-focused degree that prioritizes hands-on clinical expertise. This program follows the practitioner/scholar framework, aligning with the Vail training approach and standards set by the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology (NCSPP). Florida Tech pioneered this Psy.D. model in the southeastern United States. The curriculum combines coursework with practical training in psychological assessment, diagnostic procedures, therapeutic interventions, and specialized research. Doctoral candidates must complete a year-long supervised internship before graduation. Alumni obtain licensure nationwide and secure prominent roles in healthcare settings including mental health facilities, hospitals, and private practices.
The program cultivates comprehensive understanding of psychological theories and therapeutic techniques. Trainees learn to evaluate client needs, implement tailored treatment strategies, monitor therapeutic outcomes, and adjust approaches when necessary. The curriculum emphasizes psychology's professional ethics while highlighting critical thinking skills and the application of behavioral science research findings.
