Environmental engineers combine engineering, mathematics, earth science, soil science, life science, and materials science to create solutions for environmental issues, including enhancing water quality, managing air pollution, ensuring safe waste disposal, and conserving natural resources.

Career Outlook
The employment of civil engineers is expected to increase by 5% between 2018 and 2028. With the aging of U.S. infrastructure, civil engineers will be essential for overseeing projects to reconstruct, repair, and modernize drinking water systems, wastewater treatment facilities, solid and hazardous waste management sites, renewable energy plants, groundwater and soil cleanup, air pollution control, and other vital infrastructure to safeguard public health and the environment.

Candidates who complete internships during their college years will have improved job prospects, and those with a graduate degree are likely to have the best opportunities. The demand for environmental engineers should remain strong due to the need to fill positions left by retiring workers.
