In the first year, foundational courses on prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems establish the groundwork for advanced study. Students gain hands-on research experience through eight-week rotations in selected faculty labs, helping them identify dissertation topics and advisors. Following this initial year, learners customize their academic path by choosing from an extensive catalog of specialized genetics, molecular biology, and contemporary biological science courses. These classes prioritize analytical reasoning, effective literature assessment, and communication abilities. Each semester features seminar courses highlighting current developments in genetics and molecular biology, with presentations by both Emory researchers and external experts. Additionally, students share their ongoing research findings in regular progress meetings attended by faculty and fellow students. The program further includes guest lectures by student-nominated speakers, small-group teaching opportunities, and ethics training in research - all integral components as students advance their investigations and develop their dissertations.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants to the GMB program should have strong undergraduate backgrounds in the physical, chemical, biological, or behavioral sciences. Three general criteria are used to evaluate applicants: GPA, research experience, and letters of recommendation. Over the last 5 years, accepted students have had better than a B+ average, and strong undergraduate or professional research experiences. Students must indicate that they are highly motivated for a career in biological or biomedical research.

Students who have strong qualifications in all but one of these predictors of graduate performance and who can provide evidence of a productive experience in laboratory or field science will also be considered for admission.

International applicants whose native language is not English must also complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The recommended score is 100, and admitted applicants usually a wide range scores.

For the Fall 2020 admissions cycle, the application deadline is tentatively December 1, 2019.
