The Department of French and Italian Studies provides diverse course offerings in both languages, along with several English-taught classes that often cross-list with other academic units. Students have the option to pursue either a major or minor in French Studies or Italian Studies.
Our curriculum features an array of language and cultural studies, robust academic support services, unique international study opportunities, and dedicated faculty members. New students typically start with introductory language classes. Advanced literature and culture courses benefit from our specialized Writing Clinic assistance. High-achieving undergraduates may qualify for graduate-level coursework. For international study, we provide two distinct programs: the Paris Summer Intensive featuring six weeks of language immersion and cultural experiences, and the EDUCO program enabling semester or year-long enrollment at the University of Paris—a rare opportunity among peer institutions. Campus life includes active participation in the French Club and French Theater Group, plus access to departmental events and annual French cultural festivals hosted both at Emory and throughout Atlanta.
