American Studies equips students with expansive, critical thinking skills about U.S. culture. The curriculum explores evolving cultural patterns across different eras, examining how these manifest in the diverse experiences of Americans from various regions, social classes, racial and ethnic groups, genders, and national origins. This interdisciplinary program immerses students in both American culture and the multifaceted analytical approaches of American Studies, which examine cultural phenomena through multiple lenses. Students encounter diverse disciplinary viewpoints through Contributing Courses while learning to synthesize these perspectives in the Core Course, Introduction, and Senior Symposium. The program encourages exploration of both the boundaries of American identity and the historical contexts shaping the American experience. Faculty members bring expertise from multiple departments including English, Women's Studies, Sociology, Religion, and History at Emory University.
