The Music Department at East Tennessee State University, founded in 1946, holds full accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music. It provides specialized training in the Suzuki flute method, with courses adhering to the certification standards set by the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA). Students can pursue either a Bachelor of Music (BM) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree at the undergraduate level. The BM program offers concentrations in Music Education and Performance, equipping graduates for professional careers, advanced studies, or teaching positions in K-12 schools. The BA program features concentrations in Performance, Contemporary Music Performance, Music History, and Composition, catering to students who wish to study music without pursuing performance or education careers. This degree option suits those exploring alternative music-related paths or seeking a music degree while preparing for non-musical professions requiring college credentials, offering a liberal arts approach to musical studies.
