The Westphal Studies program offers a customized academic path designed by the student. To qualify, students must have finished two terms of their junior year within an Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design major before applying to this specialized program.
A select group of Antoinette Westphal College students find their aspirations align with interdisciplinary areas or niche aspects beyond their primary major, requiring greater flexibility than their structured curriculum provides. The Westphal Studies major supports these students by expanding career possibilities while integrating focused study in a complementary discipline. This program balances the college's emphasis on specialized training for professional fields with the evolving, cross-disciplinary nature of media arts and design. It enables students with foundational expertise to pursue well-defined alternative pathways.
Enrollment is restricted to current Media Arts and Design students who have completed their sophomore year's intensive major coursework and either a co-op experience or junior-year classes. Applicants must submit:
A personalized study plan created in collaboration with and approved by a Westphal Studies Program Advisors Committee member
A written statement outlining the applicant's objectives and how the proposed curriculum supports them
For students without six months of field experience, a description of suitable co-op opportunities
A recommendation letter from the student's current program director
