The Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education Visual Art equips students to teach art to grades 6-12 across diverse educational environments, including urban and suburban public and private middle and high schools.
This program covers educational theories and practical teaching methods, incorporating hands-on field experiences that involve classroom observation and teaching practice at various schools, culminating in student teaching. Early and consistent academic advising is recommended to help students plan and track their coursework. The curriculum blends educational theory with fieldwork while allowing students to pursue their chosen major. Coursework follows a structured approach for both middle and high school levels, with field experience being a central component throughout.
Beyond meeting Illinois licensure standards, the program emphasizes global education by requiring candidates to earn an International Baccalaureate (IB) Teaching and Learning Certificate. This IB certification for the Middle Years Program (MYP) and Diploma Program (DP) prepares graduates to teach in IB schools worldwide. The IB credential enhances career prospects while fostering inquiry-based learning and reflective teaching practices.
