The Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education Mathematics equips students to teach grades 5 through 12 in diverse educational environments, ranging from urban to suburban public and private middle and high schools. This program covers foundational education theories, practical teaching methods, hands-on field experiences involving classroom observation and participation, and culminates in student teaching. Early and consistent advising is recommended to help students plan and track their academic progress.
The curriculum blends educational theory with real-world practice while allowing students to specialize in their chosen major. Coursework follows a structured framework for both middle and high school levels, with field experience being a key component. Beyond meeting Illinois licensure standards, the program emphasizes global education by requiring candidates to earn an International Baccalaureate (IB) Teaching and Learning Certificate. This IB credential, covering both the Middle Years Program (MYP) and Diploma Program (DP), prepares graduates to teach in IB schools worldwide. The IB certification enhances career prospects while fostering inquiry-based learning and reflective teaching practices.
