The Secondary Education Major for dual-degree students enables them to pursue a primary major in Secondary Education alongside a complementary major in their chosen licensure field (such as Art, Design & Media, Biology, Chemistry, English, Environmental Science, History, Mathematics, or Physics). As dual majors, students must complete both programs and meet all state certification requirements to qualify for teaching licensure. This dual-major structure equips aspiring secondary educators with both a Secondary Education degree and specialized knowledge in their content area. Similar to the integrated Secondary Education majors with embedded disciplinary coursework (e.g., Secondary Education Biology or English), this dual-major option leverages the combined expertise of COE's Secondary Education Program and Educational Policy Studies faculty to engage students with critical educational concepts. The curriculum explores pressing topics including educational disparities, school governance, identity formation, equity in education, and the historical, cognitive, and sociocultural dimensions of learning and society. These themes intersect with pedagogical approaches like content-specific teaching strategies, progressive education methods, learning theories, curriculum design, and professional development. The program's structure intentionally weaves these elements together to thoroughly prepare future educators.
