Dartmouth's Studio Art program provides students with an in-depth, focused journey into visual arts creation. The curriculum examines technical skills, perceptual development, and aesthetic principles within both historical and modern frameworks. Classes are designed to immerse students in hands-on artistic practice through active work with various visual mediums. The Studio Art major requires completion of 10 courses, with offerings spanning architecture, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. While Drawing I serves as a prerequisite for Painting I and advanced drawing/sculpture classes, no prior experience is needed for introductory courses in drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, or special topics. The printmaking facility occupies the second level of the Black Family Visual Arts Center, featuring multiple presses (including an electric model), an etching acid room, spray booth, and lithography area. Certain courses may utilize the UV station for solar plate creation or incorporate equipment from the Dartmouth Book Arts Workshop. Course fees include materials like paper, ink, plexiglass for monotypes, and depending on the class, metal plates, wood blocks, linoleum, or lithographic stones.
