Dartmouth's Studio Art program provides students with an in-depth, focused study of visual art creation. Courses examine technical skills, visual perception, and artistic principles within both historical and modern frameworks. The curriculum is designed to immerse students in hands-on artistic practice through active work with various visual mediums. To complete the Studio Art major, students take 10 courses spanning architecture, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. While Drawing I serves as a prerequisite for Painting I and advanced drawing/sculpture classes, no prior experience is needed for introductory courses in drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, or special topics. The introductory painting course builds on Drawing I fundamentals, teaching color theory, paint mixing, and oil painting techniques through still life, portrait, and self-portrait projects while exploring methods for creating texture, light effects, and dimensional form.
