Dartmouth's Studio Art program provides students with an in-depth, rigorous study of artistic creation in visual media. Courses examine technical skills, perceptual development, and aesthetic principles within both historical and modern frameworks. The curriculum is designed to foster hands-on, immersive experiences with various artistic mediums. To complete the Studio Art major, students must take 10 courses spanning disciplines like architecture, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. While Drawing I serves as a prerequisite for Painting I and advanced drawing/sculpture classes, no prior experience is needed for introductory courses in drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, or special topics. Through working with still life arrangements, live models, and environmental subjects, students develop fundamental abilities in perspective, proportion, composition, and form.
