Students pursuing an M.S. degree typically finish within two years, though they may have up to four years to fulfill all requirements. Each M.S. candidate works with a committee chair (primary advisor) in their chosen field and selects a secondary advisor. Rather than following set course requirements, M.S. students collaborate with their advisory committee to choose classes aligned with their background and academic interests. The program requires one major concentration within the field and one minor outside it, with no fixed credit hour mandates. Before graduating, M.S. candidates must present at least one research seminar and participate in teaching for a minimum of one semester. Alongside Graduate School examinations, students must pass a qualifying exam before their second semester begins. The Food Science and Technology program provides MS degrees with these specializations: General Food Science, Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology, Food Engineering, Dairy Science, Food Processing Waste Technology, International Food Science, Sensory Evaluation, and Enology.
