The Master of Professional Studies (Human Ecology) program is designed for working professionals seeking additional academic training without a focus on advanced research or teaching careers. This one-year Master's degree often suits individuals who are already established in their fields but require specialized knowledge to enhance their job performance. Their MPS (Human Ecology) curriculum centers on coursework directly relevant to their professional challenges or interests. Candidates should demonstrate through their work experience and motivation that they can successfully undertake and complete this graduate program. The program's core emphasis examines fibrous materials and their applications in clothing, engineering structures (like composite materials), medical uses, and home decor. The Fiber Science and Apparel Design discipline combines practical and interdisciplinary approaches, with faculty from both Human Ecology and Engineering colleges.
Participants must build expertise in their foundational discipline while acquiring complementary knowledge to support their specialization. Current research initiatives explore high-performance fibers, eco-friendly composites, fabric cleaning and surface chemistry, fragrance-infused textiles, medical and construction applications of textile materials, electronic polymers, liquid-crystal polymers, textile dye chemistry, fiber crystal structures, fiber electrospinning, cellulose applications, fashion design, design anthropology, clothing sizing and fit, specialized apparel, historical and cultural textile studies, mass customization techniques, and apparel industry technology management.
