The main goal of this research field is to deepen our comprehension of fluid dynamics in natural environments. Our approach equally values experimental work—conducted both in the DeFrees Hydraulics Laboratory and field settings—alongside theoretical modeling and sophisticated computational methods. Active research areas encompass wave breaking and coastal dynamics, interactions between waves and structures, tsunami behavior, air-sea exchange mechanisms, pollutant dispersion in coastal zones, lake circulation and mixing processes, innovative measurement techniques, and hydrological events including land-atmosphere exchanges, surface water infiltration, and groundwater movement.
